In their own words
Model United Nations (Model UN or MUN) is an extracurricular activity in which students simulate the work of the United Nations by representing countries and participating in debate, negotiation, and diplomacy. Amherst Model UN prepares for and attends collegiate MUN conferences while also holding mock conferences and simulations on campus.
At a Model UN conference, each participant, or “delegate,” represents a United Nations member state in a committee modeled on the UN system. Delegates representing the same country collectively form a “delegation.” Within their committees, delegates debate and negotiate solutions to issues ranging from international peace and security to economic development, human rights, and environmental protection. Amherst Model UN also participates in crisis committees, which feature fast-paced simulations of historical and contemporary events.
Amherst Model UN typically attends two to three conferences each semester. Recent conferences have included CHOMUN in Chicago, NCSC in DC, BARMUN and HNMUN in Boston, UPMUNC in Philadelphia, and BUCS in Providence. Amherst MUN is also a member of Five Colleges MUN, through which it shares conference resources, programming, and social events with Model UN organizations at UMass Amherst, Smith College, and Mount Holyoke College.
